KINDERGARTEN BACK TO SCHOOL BASH
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, PA OCTOBER 2, 2006: “I want to stay in kindergarten for
the rest of my life.” Those words, spoken by an excited kindergarten student,
would set the tone for the 2006-2007 VCS Kindergarten Back to School Bash. This
enthusiastic and energetic group of students had an opportunity to take part in
an annual VCS tradition led by Patricia (Pat) Rich, VCS Kindergarten teacher and
staff member of sixteen years.
VCS’ Back to School Bash allows kindergarten students to share their excitement
for VCS with their family members. As with most events at VCS this evening
followed in the “VCS Family” theme with students and family gathering for a
potluck dinner. Always a fun event, the VCS potluck lets new friends introduce
to one another delicious dishes that have been handed down from generation to
generation! The buffalo chicken dip seemed to be a great hit!
With the sound of youthful voices echoing throughout the dining area parents
were able to exchange pleasantries; and Mrs. Rich was able to cover the stuff
that’s important to grown-ups like grading, behavioral expectations and how
standards work in the VCS classroom.
With bellies filled this class of twelve was anxious to kick the fun meter up a
notch or two! Of course it’s time for that VCS classic the “Tooty-Ta” dance.
There seemed to be a core of paparazzi circling the dance floor as the flash of
the cameras seemed to indicate that this was truly a moment that was meant to be
captured on film! Next, what kind of kindergarten event would it be if there
wasn’t an opportunity to bark the ABC’s with the parents.
Circling together the children decided that it would be wise to show their
parent that they were doing more in Kindergarten then just having “FUN.” It was
time to demonstrate phonics skills. Little did the parent know this could be
accomplished by singing one of their favorite songs “Mary Wore Her Red Dress.”
Next stop, Kindergarten Central, with the whispers of “wait till you see our
classroom” echoing through the hallway as the children led the way. This room,
located at the farthest reaches of VCS, is a great expanse for this group of
twelve. Moving from learning station to learning station the children showed off
their home away from home to their parents.
Finally, with great excitement, it was time to introduce the parents to “King
Bluey” the official fish the VCS Kindergarten. King Bluey will be an important
part of life at VCS this Kindergarten year!
An invited guest noted: “… I was amazed at the level of community this class had
achieved in just the first 14 days of school. Their excitement for learning was
evident and their faces said it all—Kindergarten is the place to be!”
